Girls and boys in their early teens are more likely to develop acne breakouts. Acne breakouts occur when your oil glands produce too much sebum, which is an oily substance that can look a bit like grease. To make matters worse, your body normally gets rid of dead skin cells but some people have particularly stubborn and “sticky” cells that do not shed on their own and just stays attached to your skin. These skin cells can combine with the sebum and block hair follicles, which in turn can cause acne.
You may have grown up believing in a few myths about acne; there are plenty of those myths out there. So let’s set the matter straight once and for all. Even though a blackhead may look like dirt blocking one of your pores, dirt does not cause acne. A combination of sebum and skin cells can sometimes float to the entrance of the pore and attract dirt. This is why blackheads are black. But the real culprit is not dirt, it’s the stuff that’s inside the pore.
Contrary to popular belief, chocolate and French fries DO NOT cause acne. Although eating too much of the two may cause you to gain a few pounds, they do not cause acne. Masturbating or engaging in sex also does not cause acne. When having sex, you have other things to worry about besides pimples. Acne doesn’t discriminate genders, both girls and boys can have it. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you’re a girl), boys tend to have worse acne because boys bodies produce more skin oils. Acne can also be genetic, so if your mum or your dad has had acne as a teen, chances are so will you.
Oddly, your immune system may actually aggravate your acne by making you extra sensitive to the bacteria that clog up hair follicles. Antibodies that your body releases when it senses the presence of bacteria can actually cause your skin to be inflamed and develop more pimples.
Also, be careful in using beauty products like makeup, hair gunk and suntan products that contain oil. Oil-based skin products can contribute to the worsening of acne. If you’re under stress; if you’re worried about getting into a good university or you’re nervous about asking a girl out, your acne may worsen. Hormone levels during a girl’s period can also cause more sebum to be produced, which can worsen acne breakouts.
In addition, as much as possible, keep out of the sun; as sun exposure cannot only cause premature aging and damage your skin: it can also cause acne. Although making sure that your face is clean is important in guaranteeing that your acne does not get worse and will gradually heal, be careful not to scrub too hard. Resist the temptation to pick or squeeze.
It is possible to have acne as a teen and live through it; just ask your parents.
